The way that thumbs operate differently from our fingers is one of the things that define us as humans.
Research shows that the younger generation has taken to using thumbs instinctively for tasks where the rest of us use our index finger. This is because children use their thumbs more for compiling text messages and playing hand-held computer games. Their brains have freed the thumb from playing second fiddle to the index finger.
